What is a birthstone?
A birthstone is a gemstone associated with the month a person was born. Each of the twelve months has at least one stone, and some months — June, August, October, November, December and March — have two or more.
What are the birthstones for each month?
January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal, November topaz and December turquoise.
Who came up with birthstones?
The idea traces to the twelve stones in the breastplate of Aaron in the Book of Exodus, was linked to birth months by 18th-century Polish gem traders, and was standardised into the modern list by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912.
